Dear KMS members and APJAS readers,

We hope that the extreme weather that we experienced this summer did not cause any major damage to you and your people.

On August 8-9, 2022, a record breaking rainfall was observed in the Seoul metropolitan area. In retrospect, we can expect the pressure systems and the inflow of water vapor around Korea to have caused the heavy rainfall. However, it must have been a challenging task to the forecasters to make accurate forecasts at that time. All the media in Korea and overseas media showed great interest in reporting the heavy rainfall events and their damages, along with their connections with climate change.

APJAS is going to call papers for a special issue on analysis of weather conditions this summer or its linkage to climate change (planning to publish in 2024). Please contact me if you are interested in writing a paper to be submitted in the special issue and are interested in serving as a guest editor (e-mail: hoch@snu.ac.kr). In addition, if you have a plan to submit your paper in the special issue, please write the title and author(s) of the paper and send it to me or the guest editor. We will notify you as soon as the guest editor is decided. In China and India, the weather conditions in the summer of 2022 were also very different from previous years, so we plan to ask Chinese and Indian scholars to participate. We ask for your interest and participation.

안녕하십니까? 올 여름 이상 기상에 회원님들 가정과 주변에 큰 피해가 없었기를 바랍니다.

2022년 8월 8-9일에 서울 수도권에 정말 많은 비가 내렸습니다. 사후분석을 해보면 우리나라 주변 기압계 배치와 수증기 유입 등을 감안하면 당연히 커다란 비가 와야 하는 상황입니다. 물론 당시에 실황 예보를 하는 예보관들은 큰 고민을 했고, 예보 자료를 생산하느라 고생도 많았을 것으로 짐작합니다. 우리나라 모든 언론과 해외 언론에서도 이번 집중호우와 피해, 그리고 기후변화와 연관성에 대해서 큰 관심을 보였습니다.

APJAS에서는 올 여름 기상 상황을 분석하거나 기후변화와 연관성을 짓는 연구 논문을 모아서 특별호(2024년에 출판을 계획)를 준비하고자 합니다. 회원님께서 특별호에 제출할 논문 작성에 큰 관심을 갖고 계시고, 나아가 게스트 에디터로 봉사하실 의향이 있으시면 제게 연락을 주십시오(이메일: hoch@snu.ac.kr). 아울러 특별호에 논문을 제출하시고자 하는 분은 논문 (가)제목과 저자를 작성해서 저나 게스트 에디터에게 보내주십시오. 게스트 에디터가 결정 되는대로 추후 공지하겠습니다. 중국과 인도에서도 2022년 여름 기상 상황이 예년과 매우 달라서 중국과 인도학자에게도 참여를 요청할 계획입니다. 많은 회원님들의 관심과 참여를 부탁드립니다.
